Barcelona: Must-See Gaudí

When you travel to Barcelona, you’ll find yourself in the presence of some of the most unique works of architecture in the world thanks to a man named Antoni Gaudí. Gaudí was a Spanish architect famous for his one-of-a-kind style of design. His works are better described in pictures than words, so I’ll go ahead with the top 3 “Must-See Gaudí” locations in Barcelona!

1. Casa Batlló

Located just north of La Rambla, the main tourist street in Barcelona, Casa Batlló is a house designed by Gaudí that is just as much of a spectacle inside as it is outside. Covered in his signature mosaic details and curved shapes, this landmark earns its reputation as a necessary stop on any tour of the city.

2. Park Güell

If you liked the whimsical design of Casa Batlló, you’re going to love Park Güell! This park in the hills above the city center is quintessential Gaudí. Colorful mosaics, rounded rooftops, and even the bright pink house of the late architect, which is now a museum. From the mosaic benches lining the park, you can see out across Barcelona and catch a glimpse of the next sight on this list!

3. La Sagrada Familia

Famously unfinished, this Roman Catholic basilica was the last project Gaudí worked on before his death in 1926. Much like Casa Batlló, you would be hard pressed to say whether the interior or exterior of this incredible structure is more of a masterpiece. From the outside, La Sagrada Familia looks unlike any other religious structure you’ve ever seen. Every inch of its façade is decorated with intricately carved details. Inside, it’s hard to decide where to look between the curving pillars leading up the faceted ceiling, the swirling staircases, and the balconies bathed in technicolor light from the stained glass windows. When you visit, be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to stand still in awe of your surroundings.

Tip: Definitely book tickets ahead of time to go inside to avoid the lines!
